Why Education is the Most Important Factor

Image
Education is a major issue regarding the BLM movement. The majority of people do not truly understand how Black people are targeted more solely because of their race and the pre-conceived notions and stigmas that surround them. In the United States the statistics show that Black people are treated much worse by the police compared to any other race. That is why it is important for us to educate everyone on these matters in order to show why Black Lives Matter is needed and why it is so important. In 2017 alone, the police force in the United States were responsible for the deaths of 1,147 people. Black people accounted for 25% (282) of the individuals killed, while they are only 13% of the population. These charts from MAPPING POLICE VIOLENCE will help show just how targeted Black people are in the United States by the police force. MAPPING POLICE VIOLENCE. (2018). Police killed 1,147 people in the U.S. in 2017. Retrieved March 7, 2018, from https://mappingpoliceviolence.org/ ...

Why is Black Lives Matter not Supported by Everyone, and Even Viewed Negatively by Some

Image
Black Lives Matter as an organization faces opposition from other organizations and individuals who do not agree with them. As stated in one of my earlier posts, race affects your perspective, and for Black Lives Matter the biggest factor in the movement is affected by race. For this reason Black Lives Matter is stuck in a sticky situation, as certain groups feel that Black people are promoting their own lives more than the lives of other humans, and this has caused individuals to criticize the group and create theory own slogans and movements such as All Lives Matter.  One explanation as to why these individuals are against the Black Lives Matter movement can be viewed under the social norms theory. According to the social norms theory behaviour is influenced by perception of what is normal or typical. For the majority of us who do not live in these communities, we are not able to fully understand the relationship that police officers have with Black people, as we ourselve...

Behaviours That Represent BLM

Image
WE’RE GOING TO STAND UP AS A COMMUNITY AND FIGHT AGAINST ANYONE WHO BELIEVES THAT MURDER OR ANY VIOLENT ACTION BY THOSE WHO ARE SWORN TO PROTECT US SHOULD CONSISTENTLY GO UNPUNISHED THESE ROBBERIES OF LIVES MAKE US FEEL HELPLESS AND HOPELESS BUT WE HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT WE ARE FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHTS OF THE NEXT GENERATION, FOR THE NEXT YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN WHO BELIEVE IN GOOD These two quotes above were quotes that Beyonce had posted on her website in order to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement. The powerful part about these quotes are that these explain the behaviours of the protesters and their mindsets, and help explain the injustices and grievances that black people in the west have to deal with, for the most part. These behaviours are both important and extremely effective because of the fact that they help us in understanding the grievances of Black people and they educate us on the plights of Black communities.  Black communities in Ameri...

How to Support Black Lives Matter

Image
Whether you are black or not, Black Lives Matter affects us all, due to the fact that these injustices that are affecting black people today, are deeply rooted in historical contexts that have been formed in western societies for the past few hundred years. Injustice towards any race or ethnicity is something that we as Canadians and North Americans do not tolerate, and something that we fight against. We are against discrimination and it is for this reason why we need to support this movement in order to show that discrimination will not be tolerated, and that every human being is equal and deserves equal treatment. Now you're wondering, what can you do to support Black Lives Matter? How can you make a difference in the system? Is it even possible to make a change? Changing the way the system works and the mindsets of individuals will always be tough, but the outcome is always worth it. One way that you can make a change is through going to the official Black Lives Matter websi...

http://www.elleuk.com/life-and-culture/culture/news/g30839/celebrities-flock-to-social-media-to-support-blacklivesmatter/?slide=1 The Black Lives Matter movement is not something that is just promoted by everyday individuals, but also something that affects and is promoted by celebrities. A majority of the individuals creating social media posts relating to the movement are Black, however this is because the injustices and deaths of innocent Black Americans affect them more than other individuals. The celebrity posts were mainly in response to the police shooting and death of Alton Sterling who was shot to death by the police for selling CD's. The celebrities used a variety of different platforms to express their shock and protest, with some utilizing Instagram such as Tyga who posted a powerful photo with the phrase DON'T SHOOT written on his hands and the caption:  Stand up and fight for whats right it could your family next! #blacklivesmatter yes #alllivesmatter Too but ...
