How Celebrities Are Helping Black Lives Matter

A majority of the individuals creating social media posts relating to the movement are Black, however this is because the injustices and deaths of innocent Black Americans affect them more than other individuals. The celebrity posts were mainly in response to the police shooting and death of Alton Sterling who was shot to death by the police for selling CD's. The celebrities used a variety of different platforms to express their shock and protest, with some utilizing Instagram such as Tyga who posted a powerful photo with the phrase DON'T SHOOT written on his hands and the caption:  Stand up and fight for whats right it could your family next! #blacklivesmatter yes #alllivesmatter Too but ...

According to this poll 35% of white Americans, and 43% of voters view the organization in a positive light. Politically only 21% of Republicans have a positive view of the organization, while on the Democratic side a whopping 65% of Democrats view the organization in a positive light.  The online survey questioned 2051 registered voters, over a 5 day time period, surveying 37% Democrat, 31% Republican, 27% independent, 4% other, 65% white, 14% Hispanic and 12% Black/African American. What Makes Black Lives Matter Effective as a Social Campaign

Black Lives Matter has been able to be such an effective movement because of its use of social media. Social media has allowed individuals to share their stories and spread news at a rate much faster than before. Social media has allowed for Black Lives Matter to break social, cultural and political barriers and create real life results. The utilization of social media has allowed Black Lives Matter to operate in an efficient manner to spread news, share ideas, and organize events. The group uses Facebook to spread news, analyze issues, conceptualize ideas and connect individuals with one another. Black Lives Matter is an extremely historical and deep rooted social movement in the United States. Although the movement only began on July 13, 2013, it shares many grievances and in many ways, is a continuation of other social movements that hold deep historical value in the United States, such as the Civil Rights Movement, which both protest the mistreatment and marginalization of African Americans simply because of their race. The Black Lives Matter movement deals with issues such as racial profiling, police brutality and racial inequality in the criminal justice system of the United States (Friedersorf, C., 2017).  The online movement was co-founded by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi who had all met through Black Organizing for Leadership & Dignity (BOLD) and the Black Lives Matter hashtag was coined by them first, and eventually formed the online campaign (Ruffin II, H.G., 2016).
